40-Ton Whale Crashed-Landed on a Yacht

Ralph Mothes and Paloma Werner's sailing trip on Sunday off the picturesque southwestern coast of Cape Town in South Africa encountered a not-so little glitch when a 40-ton whale jumped out of the water onto their yacht, snapping the mast in two.

According to Werner, a Cape Town Sailing Academy Administrator, the young Southern Right whale was longer than their 10-meter yacht - most likely between 11 and 14 meters. His boyfriend Mothes is a sailing instructor.

The seas around Cape Town are packed with whales and great white sharks during the winter months, which fall in the middle of the year.

Officials are now investigating whether the whale was being annoyed before it breached.
