Watch Mystery Missile Video | Missile Launch California
The sky northwest of Catalina Island, about 35 miles west of Los Angeles was illuminated Monday night by what seems to be a missile, as captured by a KCBS news helicopter.
Some experts think the mystery missile launch was just an optical illusion associated with atmospherics along with the contrails of a plane flying off in the distance. Others say it could be a test-firing from a submarine. Navy officials, however, claimed there was no Navy activity reported in the area yesterday.
The North American Aerospace Defense Command and the U.S. Northern Command, which operates the U.S. and Canadian missile warning system, are currently doing their investigation and unable to give specific details regarding the event.
